Teaching as a Career in Maharashtra

Teaching in Maharashtra is primarily done at 3 levels: school, College and University. To become a teacher in the school level, one has to opt for B.Ed or Bachelor of Education degree which can be done from any recognised colleges or institutes in Maharashtra. With the completion of the B.Ed degree, makes a student eligible to work as a teacher in the different secondary and higher secondary schools in Maharashtra. For Nursery and pre school teaching, along with a  graduate degree, a diploma or Certificate in Pre-school teacher education programme of a duration of not less than one year, or B.Ed is required. Bachelor of Elementary Education (B.El.Ed.) or Diploma of Elementary Education (D.El.Ed.)  is mandatory for teaching at the primary level.

The education department of Maharashtra has also started holding Teacher's Eligibility Test (TET) for the recruitment of primary and high school teachers.

To become a teacher in the College and university level in Maharashtra, one do not have to undergo any formal teacher training but have to qualify for National Eligibility Test (NET) conducted by UGC. The minimum qualification to apply for NET is a post graduation degree. Qualifying the NET can make them eligible to apply for the post of Professor, Assistant Professor in any college and universities in Maharashtra.
